Description
As we age, exposure to factors in the environment, namely sun, and the aging process itself cause deterioration of collagen, a protein in our body’s connective tissue that supports our skin. CosmoPlast® and CosmoDerm® are bioengineered human-based collagen injectable fillers that lessen scars and wrinkles by replacing lost or damaged collagen. CosmoPlast® is designed to be used around the mouth and lips and to fill deeper lines; CosmoDerm® is recommended for forehead lines, crow’s feet, and other fine lines. Dr. Farella often uses CosmoPlast® and CosmoDerm® in combination with Juvéderm™ or Restylane® during same procedure for better results. Whenever possible, he recommends Juvéderm™ and Restylane® in place of CosmoPlast® and CosmoDerm® because they last longer.
About the Procedure
CosmoPlast® and CosmoDerm® are injected just below the surface of the skin beneath lines, wrinkles, and scars. CosmoPlast® also can be injected around the lips to create a more defined border. Treatment usually takes 15 to 20 minutes.
Results
You will notice results immediately following CosmoPlast® or CosmoDerm® treatment. Results typically last three to six months, depending on the area treated. Injectable collagen fillers slowly are absorbed by the body, necessitating touch-up every four to six months to maintain results. Less filler usually is required for touch-ups.
Anesthesia and Pain
CosmoPlast® and CosmoDerm® injections are virtually pain-free. Both products are formulated with lidocaine, a local anesthetic that temporarily numbs the injection site. Some patients require an additional topical or local anesthetic.
Recovery
Most patients can return to work or daily activities immediately after treatment with CosmoPlast® or CosmoDerm®. Redness and puffiness subside within an hour. Mild bruising and tenderness may last a few days.
Risks and Complications
With any procedure, risks and complications can occur but generally are rare. Because they are formulated from human collagen and are unlikely to cause allergic reactions, CosmoPlast® and CosmoDerm® collagen filler injections do not require skin testing. The products should not be used in people with severe allergies or who are allergic to lidocaine. You will receive instructions on contacting our staff if you have concerns or questions after your treatment.
FDA Approval
In 2003, CosmoPlast® and CosmoDerm® were approved for the correction of facial wrinkles, acne scars and other soft tissue contour deficiencies, as well as for restoration of the lip border.
We use CosmoPlast® or CosmoDerm® to fill surface wrinkles and scars and to define the lips. In Dr. Farella’s practice, these have replaced Zyplast®, Zyderm®, and other animal-based collagen products that are more likely to cause allergic reactions and require skin testing before use.
