Dermabrasion

Hi! I'm Dr. John Farella; a board certified plastic surgeon. The decision to undergo Dermabrasion is an exciting one. It is my belief, that an educated patient allows you to determine your personal goals, and enables you to make an informed decision. I have developed this website as a patient information source. Hopefully, this site will prepare you for your consultation.

Is dermabrasion right for you? If you have acne scars, fine lines and wrinkles, sun-damaged skin, or uneven skin tone, talk to us about how dermabrasion can help improve the color, smoothness, and texture of your skin.

Best Uses

Dermabrasion

Description

Dermabrasion removes several outer layers of the skin with a cosmetic sanding wheel.and depth of treatment is dependent upon surgical technique.

About the Procedure (Board Certified)

Dermabrasion is achieved with an electrical drill fitted with a brush or diamond head that resurfaces and removes several layers of skin down to bleeding tissue. Depth of skin removal is dependent on technique and should be done only by a surgeon because it creates an open wound.

Results
Dermabrasion

Skin improvement from dermabrasion is long-lasted but the procedure may be repeated if needed. If second or third treatments are necessary or desired, they should be spaced at yearly intervals.

Anesthesia and Pain

Dermabrasion requires either local anesthesia plus sedation or general anesthesia, depending on the extent of the treatment area and your and your doctor’s preference.

Recovery

Expect downtime of seven to 10 days after dermabrasion. The redness and swelling that follow the procedure can last for weeks to months. Proper cleaning, moisturizing, and protection from the sun aids healing.

Risks and Complications

Risks from dermabrasion are rare and can include scarring, infection, and uneven skin tone in the treated area.

You will receive instructions on contacting our staff if you have concerns or questions after your treatment.
