Laser Tatoo Removal
New advancements in laser technology have increased the options for persons who have tattoos that they no longer want. In the 1980s, practitioners used the CO2 laser for tattoo removal but treatment had a high risk of scarring and left behind a "ghost" of the tattoo. Today's pulsed beam laser, also called a Q-switched laser, delivers intense laser beams that effectively shatter tattoo pigment. The body then gets rid of the pigment fragments. Response to laser tattoo removal depends on the type of tattoo and the intensity of the pigment. Traditional methods of tattoo removal by surgical excision or dermabrasion also are effective but laser removal is state-of-the-art.
The length of this outpatient procedure varies, depending on the size and design of the tattoo. Removal of professional tattoos may require eight or more treatments, spaced about one month apart. Amateur tattoos that were created with ashes, pencil lead, or pen ink may disappear completely after up to eight treatments.
The laser tattoo removal process is mildly uncomfortable and may feel like a rubber band snapping against skin. Some say that the level of pain is similar to that of tattooing. Dr. Farella may apply a topical anesthetic before the procedure.
Laser tattoo removal has very few risks and complications. Laser treatment may not completely remove a tattoo; the efficiency of tattoo removal depends on the types of pigments used in tattoo ink. Tattoo pigments are not regulated or standardized so response to laser treatment can be difficult to predict.
