CO2/Erbium

Hi! I'm Dr. John Farella; a board certified plastic surgeon. The decision to undergo a CO2 or Erbium Laser Treatment is an exciting one. It is my belief, that an educated patient allows you to determine your personal goals, and enables you to make an informed decision. I have developed this website as a patient information source. Hopefully, this site will prepare you for your consultation.

CO2 and erbium lasers were among the first lasers used for wrinkle and acne scar reduction. They are ablative lasers because they vaporize and destroy the top layer of skin, reducing fine wrinkles and acne scars. CO2 and erbium lasers also stimulate collagen production.

CO2 and Erbium Laser Treatment

The CO2 laser is referred to as a surgical laser and was the first laser widely used by surgeons. Its beams can be focused to cut like a scalpel or defocused to resurface tissues. The CO2 laser has many uses, including removal of skin lesions like moles, warts, acne scars, and tumors, shaving of skin irregularities, laser resurfacing, moderate to deep wrinkle reduction, and skin tightening. CO2 is more effective than erbium and works better on deeper wrinkles and scars. Dr. Farella has replaced the CO2 laser with plasma technology because plasma causes less change in skin color and has a shorter recovery time. The erbium laser treats aging skin or sun-damaged skin and also is used for superficial and moderate wrinkles. It has a shorter downtime – seven to 10 days – than CO2, which has a recovery time of 14 days or more. Redness can last for several weeks, while redness after CO2 treatment lasts for months.

Although today’s CO2 and erbium lasers have fewer side effects, Dr. Farella prefers to use more advanced technology that gives better results.
