Microdermabrasion

Hi! I'm Dr. John Farella; a board certified plastic surgeon. The decision to undergo Microdermabrasion is an exciting one. It is my belief, that an educated patient allows you to determine your personal goals, and enables you to make an informed decision. I have developed this website as a patient information source. Hopefully, this site will prepare you for your consultation.

Is microdermabrasion right for you? If you have pimples and blackheads, fine wrinkles, or uneven skin tone, talk to us about how microdermabrasion can help improve the color, smoothness, and texture of your skin.

Best Uses

Microdermabrasion

Description

Microdermabrasion is an in-office procedure that uses light mechanical abrasion to rub off the top layer of skin. It achieves the same result as a superficial chemical peel in enhancing the natural glow of the skin while lessening acne, correcting mild discoloration, and smoothing the skin. Microdermabrasion is suitable for all skin types.

About the Procedure (Board Certified)

During microdermabrasion, we use a small handpiece to direct a spray of fine crystals onto the treated area. The crystals and dead outer layer of skin then are suctioned off. Microdermabrasion can be performed by a non-surgeon and does not create an open wound.

Results

Microdermabrasion

Results of microdermabrasion appear immediately after treatment and may require repeat treatments every two to three weeks, followed by maintenance every four to six weeks. Dr. Farella recommends microdermabrasion alternating with superficial facial peels every 2 weeks for best results.

Anesthesia and Pain

Microdermabrasion does not require anesthesia. It may cause minimal discomfort.

Recovery

Most people can return to work or activities immediately after microdermabrasion. Your skin may appear pink or red for a few hours and occasionally will flake and peel over several days. Proper cleaning, moisturizing, and protection from the sun can aid in maintaining your skin.

With any procedure, risks and complications can occur but generally are rare. Microdermabrasion generally is safe and free of complications when done by an experienced practitioner. Occasional side effects can include uneven skin color, scarring, allergic reactions, and sun sensitivity.
