Thermage™ uses radio waves called capacitive radio frequency (CRP) for a non-surgical tightening of the skin. The Thermage™ procedure penetrates the top, middle, and deep layers of the skin, targeting existing collagen and stimulating the formation of new collagen. A tighter and fresher collagen foundation provides better support for the skin and gives it a more firm and smooth appearance. Unlike many skin rejuvenation treatments, Thermage™ works on all skin types and colors. Dr. Farella predicts that radiofrequency procedures like Thermage™ are the wave of the future because they are non-invasive and require little downtime. However, while Thermage™ does tighten the skin, Dr. Farella feels that it is not as effective as surgical procedures like a face lift.
The Thermage™ procedure takes 20 minutes to two hours, depending on the extent of the treatment. Treated areas are heated with radiofrequency waves while surface and surrounding skin is cooled with a cooling surface before, during and after treatment to limit damage.
Skin feels and appears tighter and smoother immediately and continues to improve over approximately 6 months. Results vary from person to person and Thermage™ may not be as effective in smokers, on severely sun-damaged skin, and in patients with a lot of skin laxity. A single treatment may last for two or more years. However, Thermage™ may not work on every patient and is not a substitute for a face lift.
You will feel a mild heat sensation during treatment. We suggest oral pain medication before the procedure.
Thermage™ skin rejuvenation requires minimal downtime. Your skin will feel warm and slightly swollen after Thermage™ treatment, and may appear red for one to two days.
With any procedure, risks and complications can occur but generally are rare. Mild and occasional side effects can include redness, bumps and blisters. You will receive instructions on contacting our staff if you have concerns or questions after your treatment.
Since its first FDA approval in 2000 for collagen stimulation and skin tightening, Thermage™ has been approved for treatment of facial lines and wrinkles, wrinkles and sagging skin on all body parts, and lines, wrinkles, and drooping skin around the eyes.
We use Thermage™ for skin tightening and wrinkle reduction. Other products on the market that harness radiofrequency waves include Accent® and Galaxy™. The Accent® procedure may be faster and less painful on larger body parts. Dr. Farella recommends four to six treatments space two weeks apart
