Gynecomastia is referred to as male breasts, since this abnormality only occurs
in males. This condition can start in adolescence and may persist or can develop
in an older man due to steroid abuse, weight gain, hormonal imbalance, or a side
effect of certain medications. Fortunately, this common condition in the adolescent
age group generally resolves in two years. However, if this condition continues
it causes stress as well as embarrassment, causing patients to seek treatment.
Male breasts can be reduced with the help of liposuction as well as surgical removal
of the breasts. Most of the time this can be performed through limited incisions
that leave inconspicuous scars. The procedure is done under general anesthesia,
and takes approximately two hours. Drains are placed at the time of surgery, and
can be removed in the office in two to five days. Dr. Farella suggests patients
wear a compression vest for two months to aid in the skin re-draping process.
Patients can resume most activities within two weeks, and should be able to perform
chest exercises and heavy lifting by eight weeks. It is important to avoid steroid
use if this was a causative factor.
