Description

Portrait® is a medical device that uses plasma technology and is manufactured by the Rhytec Corporation. The Portrait® skin resurfacing tool resembles a laser but is not a true laser. It harnesses the energy of nitrogen gas to generate heat. Portrait® plasma skin rejuvenation is a proven treatment that generates new skin by stimulating the development of collagen below the surface and results in skin tightening.

Clinical tests show that Portrait® plasma skin rejuvenation improves wrinkles, tightens the skin, lessens discoloration, and boosts the tone and texture of the face. It is a highly flexible machine that can be used a different energy levels to control the number of treatments and extent of downtime. Portrait® can be used at high energy settings for deep lines and wrinkles and at lower energy settings as a light peel for skin resurfacing. Plasma also is used to reduce pre-malignant skin lesions on sun-damaged skin.

Dr. Farella has replaced the CO2 laser with Portrait® technology. Portrait® is easier to use, causes less pigment changes, and requires less downtime and postoperative care.

About the Procedure (Board Certified)

Dr. Farella adjusts the energy level of the equipment for the desired results and recovery time. Setting the Portrait® at high energy penetrates the skin to a deeper level and lessens the number of treatments but requires a longer recovery period. At lower energy levels, Portrait® treats the skin surface and requires less downtime but more than one treatment may be required. The lower energy level is recommended for darker skin types.

Portrait® plasma skin rejuvenation treatments take 15 to 30 minutes and are performed in our office. Portrait® plasma skin rejuvenation usually requires one to four treatments, depending on your skin condition, the degree of improvement that you want, and the energy level of the treatment. Lower energy treatments may need to be repeated more often for the desired results. Higher energy setting may require only one treatment. Talk to Dr. Farella about the treatment protocol that is best for you.

Results

You will notice some results immediately. The skin continues to regenerate and tighten for up to a year after treatment.

Anesthesia and Pain

A topical hydrating agent is placed on the skin before the Portrait® plasma skin rejuvenation is performed. Depending on the extent of the treatment, you may require anesthesia. You will not feel pain during the procedure.

Recovery

Various treatment protocols can be implemented. Type of protocol dictates anesthesia and recovery time. Portrait® plasma skin rejuvenation usually causes very little downtime. Treated skin areas take about a week to 10 days after high energy level treatment to return to their normal appearance. Recovery after lower energy level treatment takes a couple of days. Surface skin protects the rejuvenated lower skin levels while they heal and eventually flakes off.

Risks and Complications

The side effects of lower level treatment to improve surface wrinkles, tone, and texture may include mild redness and flaking. Higher level treatment for deep wrinkles may darken skin color, followed by peeling after three to five days. New skin will be red for several days after peeling and can be covered by makeup. Temporary changes in skin color may occur and are less dramatic than changes after CO2 treatment. Plasma treatment has less risk of infection than CO2 treatment. As with all heat treatments, burns and scars are rare. You will receive instructions on contacting our staff if you have concerns or questions after your treatment.

FDA Approval

Portrait® received FDA approval in 2003 for treatment of superficial skin lesions and keratosis, and in 2004 for wrinkles.

We use the Rhytec Portrait® plasma procedure for skin rejuvenation. Other products on the market utilize CO2 or erbium laser technology.
