Description
Juvéderm™ Ultra and Ultra Plus injectable gel soft tissue fillers smooth wrinkles and skin folds by adding structure and volume beneath the surface of the skin. Juvéderm™ is made from cross-linked hyaluronic acid, a non-animal-based complex sugar that is a natural component of the skin’s connective tissue, along with collagen and elastin. Hyaluronic acid retains water, returning moisture to the layers of the skin and helping to fill out deep wrinkles and lines. Juvéderm™ works particularly well for nasolabial folds, skin folds that form between the corners of the nose and corners of the mouth, and “marionette” folds along the sides of the mouth. Juvéderm™ Ultra is best for general facial wrinkles and folds while the thicker Juvéderm™ Ultra Plus is suggested for deeper folds and wrinkles.
The term “liquid face lift” refers to a non-surgical procedure that comprises Botox for the upper face, dermal fillers like JuvédermTM and Restylane® for the lower face and cheek area, skin rejuvenation with lasers and lights, and possibly non-surgical skin tightening.
About the Procedure (Board Certified)
Juvéderm™ gel is injected into the mid to deep layers of the skin. Its smooth texture and consistency allow the gel to fill in lines and wrinkles smoothly and evenly. Dr. Farella also may gently massage the injected area to help distribute the gel. The total procedure takes approximately 15 minutes.
Your Juvederm will be administered at one of Dr. John Farella’s offices in Westchester County, NY.
Results
Skin looks smoother and lines and folds are diminished or eliminated immediately after treatment with soft tissue fillers. The benefits of Juvéderm™ can last for up to six to eight months or even longer, although Dr. Farella often recommends touch ups, depending on your skin’s response to the procedure. Hyaluronic acid is slowly absorbed by the body. Because of the higher concentration of cross-linked hyaluronic acid in Juvéderm™, the skin may appear smoother and softer than with other injectable soft tissue fillers like Restylane® and Radiesse®.
Anesthesia and Pain
Although Juvéderm™ injections cause very little pain or discomfort, your doctor may use an injectable or topical anesthetic before treatment. You may experience mild and temporary redness, tenderness, and swelling at the injection site.
Recovery
Juvéderm™ soft tissue filler requires little to no downtime, so you can return to work or your daily routine immediately after treatment. Redness and swelling at the injection site may take a couple of days to disappear. During this time, try to limit exposure to excessive sun as well as to extreme cold weather.
Risks and Complications
With any procedure, risks and complications can occur but generally are rare. Because Juvederm ® does not contain animal proteins, they rarely cause allergic reactions. The products do not require allergy testing before treatment. Juvederm® should not be used by women who are pregnant, breastfeeding, or under 18.
To lessen bruising or bleeding at the injection site, discontinue aspirin, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications, St. John’s Wort, high doses of vitamin E, or other medications that thin the blood for one week prior injection. Talk to your doctor about whether Juvederm® is a recommended soft tissue filler if you are susceptible to keloids or hypertrophic scarring. You will receive instructions on contacting our staff if you have concerns or questions after your treatment.
FDA Approval
In 2006, FDA approved Juvéderm™ for the treatment of facial wrinkles and folds.
We use Juvéderm™ injectable gel filler, as well as Restylane® and Radiesse®. Other products on the market include Captique® and Hyaloform®.
