A woman’s breast shape and size are important aspects of a woman’s body. Often, women are unhappy with their breast size or shape, which can affect numerous areas including physical balance and their sense of femininity. Factors affecting the breast include hormonal flux, pregnancy, breastfeeding, weight gain or loss, skin elasticity, and changes in the breast tissue itself. Like many forms of plastic surgery, breast implants and breast augmentation requires an artistic eye to help enhance a woman’s life.
It is extremely important for your surgeon to have the proper amount of experience with breast augmentation. Dr. Farella combines medical intricacy with artistic prowess which leads to high patient satisfaction.
Breast augmentation is a method of enlarging breasts by using breast implants. The implants are inserted through a small, inconspicuous incision. They may be placed behind the chest muscle or behind the breast tissue. This procedure is used for patients with small or unequal breasts or patients who have lost breast volume through age, pregnancy, or breastfeeding when evaluating younger patients. Dr. Farella will wait until the breasts are fully developed before recommending breast enlargement.
The implants can be inserted through incisions made around the nipple-areola area, under the breast crease, or through the armpit. Some doctors insert the implants through the umbilicus or belly button.
Your Breast Augmentation will be performed by Dr. John Farella in Westchester County, NY.
Breast Implant Materials
The implants used for primary breast enhancements are saline or silicone implants. These salt-water implants have a thin silicone shell or envelope, which contains the salt-water solution. The saline implants used can be smooth-round implants, textured-round implants, textured bio dimensional, or pear-shaped.
Hear From Dr. Farella’s Patients
“After meeting Dr. Farella in our initial appointment I was extremely impressed. He was extremely knowledgeable, and had a very caring, compassionate genuine side to him. He listens to all of my complaints of my breasts and the issues I was experiencing because of my dissatisfaction with how I felt physically. He was very reassuring pertaining to my needs and situation and went the extra mile to answer all my questions and concerns. After that meeting, I had complete trust that he was the best surgeon I could have ever possibly chosen for myself to do such an intimate surgery. My surgery went wonderful with no complications, and my results were astonishing.”– A Very Pleased Patient
The implants will not lift the breasts or change the nipple position. Additional procedures, such as breast lifts can be performed in combination with breast enlargements to correct droopy breasts with low-lying nipples. The need for such an operation can be determined at the time of your consultation with Dr. Farella.
Breast implants are man-made mechanical devices and are considered temporary. Therefore, they will have to be exchanged at some point during your life.
Deciding the Right Implant Size
Once you have decided to undergo breast enlargement, the next consideration is breast size. Keep in mind, that there is no “correct” breast size. Dr. Farella will work with you to help decide on the right size for your body frame and personal preference.
One way to determine the size you want is to find photographs of women from lingerie catalogs or before/after photos presented by Dr. Farella. This will give Dr. Farella a starting point for the desired size. Implant sizes do not come in A, B, C, or D cups. Your new size will be a combination of what you started with, plus the implant volume. Remember, bra sizes may vary based on different styles and manufacturers. Your new bra size will ultimately depend on comfort and appearance. After breast surgery, your breasts will appear larger due to swelling but will decrease in size, and drop in position over time. The most common comment post-surgery is, “I should have gone bigger.”
Dr. Farella’s Choice
Dr. Farella prefers to use smooth-round saline implants inserted through the nipple or under the breast and placed behind the muscle. However, other options are available depending on the needs of the patient and the clinical situation.

Risks and Complications of Breast Augmentation
While complications can occur, they are rare. Some risks from breast augmentation may include but are not limited to scarring, bleeding, infection, deflation of implant, capsular contracture or scarring around the implant, asymmetry, skin wrinkling and rippling, calcification, implant displacement, fluid accumulation, contour problems secondary to or resulting from implant shape, change in nipple and skin sensation, firmness of the breasts, thrombosed veins, painful or possible deformity of breasts, and risks and complications associated with anesthesia. Smokers have a greater risk of wound healing and pulmonary complications.
After your implants are placed, subsequent alterations in breast shape may occur as a result of aging, weight loss or gain, pregnancy, or other circumstances not related to augmentation mammaplasty.
Dr. Farella will discuss potential risks and complications with you during your consultation.
Breast Augmentation Recovery
Following your breast augmentation surgery, our highly experienced and caring registered nurse will bring you to our private recovery room. Our patients’ comfort during recovery is very important. Most patients will recover within ten to fourteen days following surgery.
Dr. Farella recommends wearing a soft cotton bra without an underwire for two months when the implants are placed under the muscle. Following this guideline will allow the implant to drop into an aesthetically pleasing position. As with all cosmetic procedures, the final result will be apparent in one year.
Exercise After Breast Augmentation Recovery
After two weeks you may resume light exercise. Any strenuous exercise which includes upper body lifting can begin again in four to six weeks following surgery.
In/Out Patient
Breast augmentation can be done as an outpatient procedure under general anesthesia. The surgery takes one to two hours to complete on average.
