Tummy Tuck

Excess fat and abdominal bulge are very common occurrences which leave you feeling self-conscious. Pregnancy, weight loss, and other reasons can lead to this situation. Many times excess fat and loose skin in your abdominal area cannot be corrected with diet and exercise. In order to resolve these physical problems, a tummy tuck may be right for you.

Tummy Tuck with Dr. Farella

With the tummy tuck, also known as an abdominoplasty, it is important to integrate both medical prowess with artistic talents. Dr. Farella’s experience has lead him to be named top cosmetic surgeon in Westchester. He takes his artistic close attention to detail as he works with each patient to help them look and feel their best.

Tummy Tuck Procedure

Abdominoplasty or tummy tuck is a surgical procedure used to flatten the abdominal wall or stomach area. With pregnancy or fluctuations of weight, many patients develop skin laxity problems, as well as weakening of their muscular corset. This procedure removes excessive hanging skin, and repairs loose or stretched muscle, thereby, improving abdominal wall tone and structure. Skin that contains stretch marks on the lower abdomen may be removed as well, however, it may not be possible to remove all of them. The tummy tuck requires a horizontal incision across your lower abdomen(within or above the pubic area). The length of the incision varies depending on the amount of skin to be removed. In some cases an incision around the navel is made so that the excess skin above the navel is pulled downward and removed. The navel’s position remains unchanged. Keep in mind, the lower abdominoplasty scar is hidden by the patient’s undergarment. Even though the scar is considered permanent and visible it should fade over time.

Your Consultation

At a tummy tuck consultation, the patient will be able to speak with Dr. Farella; this will help the patient understand what the procedure involves and what they can expect from it.

The patient will go over their aesthetic goals for their abdominoplasty procedure, and a physical examination will be performed. There will also be questions that the patient will answer about their medical history. These may involve discussions of current medications and supplements, pre-existing conditions, allergies, and past procedures.

Any questions or concerns that the patient has regarding the procedure can be brought up during the consultation. Once a surgical plan has been created by Dr. Farella, a date will be selected for the tummy tuck surgery.

Risks and Complications

Even though complications can occur, they are rare. They include but are not limited to excessive scarring, bleeding, infection, change in skin sensation, skin contour irregularities, blood clots with pulmonary complications, asymmetry, delayed healing, chronic pain, fluid or blood accumulations under the skin, as well as risks and complications associated with anesthesia.
Smokers have a greater risk of skin loss, pulmonary and wound healing complications.

Tummy Tuck Recovery

After surgery, our licensed Registered Nurse will care for you in our private recovery room. Within the first week the drainage tubes put in during surgery to prevent fluids from accumulating will be removed. A support garment will be worn for two weeks. You should be able to return to work or school within two weeks. Abdominoplasty produces long lasting results as long as you can maintain your weight and do not become pregnant. After a tummy tuck, pregnancy will not hurt the mother or baby, but may alter the results. As with all cosmetic procedures, the final result will be apparent by about one year.

Exercise and the Tummy Tuck

Exercises that work the abdominal muscles should be avoided for three months. Low impact exercise can be resumed within 2 – 3 weeks. High impact exercise may be resumed within 6 – 8 weeks.

In/Out Patient

Abdominoplasty is performed as an outpatient procedure under general anesthesia. The surgery usually takes 2 – 3 hours.

How Much Does a Tummy Tuck Cost?

The cost of a tummy tuck will depend on several factors, which can be discussed during the consultation. Price can often be affected by the patient’s particular aesthetic concerns, along with the techniques chosen to address them. The total time required to perform the abdominoplasty procedure may also play a role in determining cost.
